Lawyers for Michael Flynn, President Trumpโ€™s former national security adviser, have reportedly said they will no longer communicate with the White House legal team โ€“ a move that could signal his cooperation with the special counselโ€™s investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election.

Flynnโ€™s legal teamย informed the White House lawyersย of their decision last week, according to the Associated Press. The decision could be a sign that Flynn is moving to cooperate with special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation or negotiate a deal for himself.

Hereโ€™s a look at how Flynn โ€“ who was one of the more polarizing characters in Trumpโ€™s administration โ€“ is involved in the Russian investigation.

Why did Flynn leave the White House?

Flynn resigned as Trumpโ€™s national security adviser in February over revelations that he misled Vice President Mike Pence about his communications with Russiaโ€™s ambassador to the U.S., Sergey Kislyak.

How is he connected to the Russia investigation?

Despite earlier statements to the contrary, Flynn discussed sanctions former President Barack Obama imposed on Russia with Kislyak, Sally Yates, then the deputy attorney general said in January. She said that put Flynn in a compromising position.

Flynn remains under multiple investigations by congressional committees and the Pentagonโ€™s inspector general. Heโ€™s included in Muellerโ€™s probe, as well.
