As early as July 2020, there were peer-reviewed studies showing that obesity puts people at a high risk of mortality from COVID-19 infection. At the time scientists weren’t sure why because researchers only had four months of data.
At the time scientists believed that chronic issues surrounding obesity were contributing to increased mortality however, they later learned that the spike protein in COVID-19 actually replicates in fat cells.
One of the frustrations many have had during the pandemic is the lack of conversation about personal wellbeing especially after it was learned – by credible scientists in peer-reviewed journals – that locking down is the worse thing you can do. Many have been frustrated that there has been no national campaign to get people outside and walk around.
It turns out, Mike Pence, his staff, and the COVID task force discussed it but it was ignored.
On August 25, 2020, Dr. Deborah Birx, a member of Trump’s COVID task force, led by Vice President Mike Pence sent an email title “Review: Draft POTUS Remarks – Meeting With Medical Experts” to Vice President Pence office.
The email was draft comments for Trump to use during his next media event discussing the virus. Birx addressed Sweden’s COVID statistics and obesity. She wrote that masks and social distancing were necessary because “we are a very unhealthy nation.”
“Without masks and social distancing in public and homes we end up with twice as many deaths – we are a very unhealthy nation with a lot of obesity etc – we will never look as good as even Sweden due to our co-morbidities,” Birx wrote.

Pence, who was in charge of the task force knew all along that obesity was a factor and he just ignored it. Instead, of adding self-care as part of mitigation the task force pushed masks and drugs.
It does not appear the information was ever forwarded to President Trump.
